University of Northampton

The University of Northampton is an internationally facing university committed to delivering outstanding life changing opportunities in education. In 2016/17, we had more than 1,000 international students from over 100 countries studying on campus and more than 2300 transnational education students enrolled at partner institutions in over 20 different countries worldwide.

We have been in collaboration with the University of Babylon in Iraq since 2013. This started with articulation programmes in BSc Software Engineering and BSc Computer Network Engineering, followed in 2015 with an articulation in BSc Adult Nursing. These programmes have enrolled around 100 students from Babylon to date. The Computing students went on to complete our MSc Computing programme and a number have since successfully enrolled on PhD programmes with us. The Iraq Government is also supporting a cohort of sponsored PhD students at our university in 2018. In Iraq, our next development is planned to be the commencement of franchised Computing degrees on campus at the University of Babylon in September 2018.

Although we are one of the youngest universities in the UK we are already leading the way in adding value to society, which we call social impact. That’s why we were the first university in the UK to be named as a Changemaker Campus in 2012 by Ashoka, the world’s largest network of social entrepreneurs.

In the UK-wide 2014 Research Excellence Framework our research submissions were classed as ‘world-leading’ in six key areas; Allied Health Professions, Art and Design, English Language and Literature, History, Geography and Education. We are determined to build on this and engage with more high-quality and high-impact research locally, nationally and internationally.

In 2017 the University was given the Gold Award in the Government’s Teaching Excellence Framework. This is the highest possible rating and places it among the elite of the UK’s Higher Education institutions. We were one of only 43 universities in the UK to be given the Gold rating and this is testament to our hard work in ensuring our teaching and consequently the outcomes for our students are at the highest quality.

After several successful years of successful and ongoing collaboration with the University of Babylon, we are seeking to further develop opportunities for academic and training collaborations with institutions and companies in Iraq.

Nick Petford, Vice Chancellor
